Air conditioners are capable of making all kinds of ominous noises, but have you ever heard your air conditioner hiss? Odds are you haven’t, but if your condenser fan motor has gone bad, a hissing noise can defiantly be heard. This problem just like many others could have been prevented with proper maintenance, and once we explain exactly what is wrong with your system, you will regret having neglected the air conditioner for even one season.
What is a Condenser Fan Motor?
If your condenser fan motor goes bad, there is no longer anything cooling off the coils and the compressor during each cooling cycle. The result is very high pressures within the system that eventually will trigger the pressure relief valve to pop. The popping of the relief valve is what causes the hissing noise that you hear. Once the air conditioner is able to cool off, the unit may turn back on, but in a matter of minutes the pressure relief valve will again be triggered. The fan motor must be replaced in order for the unit to ever properly cycle again.
Lack of Maintenance= Costly Repairs
How did the motor go bad in the first place? Well, the problem could be related to old age, but it could also be caused by a lack of regular maintenance. Dirt, debris, and dust can easily choke your fan motor into an early breakdown, and unfortunately it is not a cheap problem to fix! When you consider that this isn’t the only costly repair that is caused by lack of maintenance, it would be much more economical to have an affordable cleaning performed ever year than waiting for a breakdown to pay attention to your air conditioner.
Lack of Maintenance= Premature System Replacement
Also, if you allow your condenser fan motor problem to go unrepaired for too long, it could irreversibly damage the condenser. A bad condenser means that you must now replace the entire air conditioner! The cost of a new air conditioner is much more than most of us can afford right now, so do the smart thing and become a proactive homeowner. Get your unit cleaned and tested regularly, and save yourself the hassle and cost of repairs this summer!
